Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now! Each week for 6 weeks you will gain access to weekly lectures and tutorials. You will have access to all of your online content for 8 full weeks.
I'm brand new to this, what do I need to know before I enroll?
You do not need any experience with scent work or detection training to enroll in this course. What you will need is some equipment: the target odor, scent tubes or boxes or other containers, and tasty treats your dog loves! If you do not have any target odors already, we recommend purchasing a scent kit from our friends at Leerburg. This kit will include all the odors you will need to start competing or just working at home! You can purchase it here: https://leerburg.com/akckit.php
I have been doing scent work for years, will this course help me?
Yes! This course is designed to develop solid odor foundations for any dog. We have found many teams benefit from going back to basics, reconditioning odor responses, and developing strong odor obedience at the basic level. We have worked with teams competing at NW3 levels and even operational Detection K-9s that benefit from fundamental work. If some of the problems you are having include staying at source, clear indications, or disturbing the hide, this course can benefit you!
I want to compete with my dog, with this course prepare me for that?
Absolutely! This course is designed to prepare dogs for competitive scent work and to develop green dogs for working detection purposes. Many people choose to enter dogs in novice container classes after completing this introductory course while others choose to wait until their dog has completed more trial readiness training, including trained final responses and a developed searching behavior. Each dog and each team is an individual!
I'm not sure if I want to compete, what are the other benefits of this course for me and my dog?
Your dog's most natural ability is to use its nose! Sniffing for something and finding it releases powerful feel-good chemicals in your dog's brain that make your dog feel great! We have had countless students come to us with nervous, anxious, and fearful dogs to help their dogs learn confidence, independence, and self-actualization. Scent work training can also prepare your dog for other, more advanced training, by teaching them that their actions can have great consequences. You can build trust between yourself and your dog, furthering your relationship and advancing any training or behavior modification you are already doing. More than anything, dogs absolutely love this activity, and we know you will, too!

"Our GSD Lucy just started her second course with Kaiser K9 and we look forward to starting our younger GSD Magnus in their Intro class this week. Emily and Stephanie are knowledgable, experienced, patient, fun, and professional. The classes are organized, well run, and packed with practice and learning. When I have questions (and I tend to have many), their answeres are thoughtful, clear, and comprehensive. Handlers get to understand exactly what they are doing (and what they are moving toward) and why they are doing it in a particular way or order. Furthermore, the pace and methods are tailored for each dog and Kaiser K9 are experts in quickly reading dogs and understanding their needs in order to be successful at learning while having a good time. Scent work can be really fun and rewarding for dogs and Emily and Stephanie have harnessed that spirit. I recommend them without reservation!"

"I began training with Emily and Stephanie in scent work a couple of years ago. I started the classes with the intent of giving my older dog, who was retired from many other dog sports, something low-impact to keep her busy. They showed me the importance of teaching a trained alert and it was a huge lesson for me. Not only did Indy's confidence grow in a short period of time, by my confidence grew as well. We now have our NW1 title and are hooked on the sport. Thank you Emily and Stephanie for sharing your knowledge with us and continuing to challenge us."

- Debbie Kaminski, Scent Work Student and Competitor

"It's been a year since I signed up for Gibson's first scent detection class. He's earned his birch ORT from NACSW, novice containers from AKC, level one from C-wags and hopefully his level 2 soon. We've set him up to be super reliable as the levels get harder. I couldn't be any happier with the training we've gotten from Kaiser K9. Every time I walk into the ring I feel super confident in Gibson's abilities."

- Deanna Colliatie, Scent Work Student and Competitor

"Gibson has been training in nosework with Kaiser K9 for a few months now. I believe some of is increased focus in other sports is a direct result of his nosework training!"

- Kat Edrington, Scent Work Student and Competitor

"Kaiser K9, Great trainers with a super approach. I love all the wonderful things the Team at Kaiser K9 has been able to do with my Labradors."

- Jim Closson, Founder, TK Hot Retrievers

"Latte just completed 6 nosework sessions with Emily and Stephanie! Latte is rather anxious (and sometimes impatient), so the classes and practice sessions at home have been helpful for her to build confidence and improve on her patience! We will also enroll Lea (another dog in our family)!"

- Loretta Holmberg, Scent Work Student and Competitor

"The Kaisers have helped me build a strong relationship with my dog. They have been patient with me every step of the way, helping me understand my patterns and how I was communicating to Hudson my Doberman. Hudson loves the nose work classes and I love how much they teach during class. Their approach is a bit different than what I have experienced in other nose work classes, and Hudson and I have seen dramatic improvement at both ends of the leash as a result."

- Cat Wade, Founder, Blue Chip Performance; Scent Work Student

"My dog, Claude, had such a great time learning the basics and beginnings of nosework with Stephanie and Emily! He had fun, built up his confidence, and was interested in learning! Even though he'll never compete or anything like that, just working his brain and getting him to do new things was wonderful! So excited to start my other dog with Kaiser K9!"
